Diabetic Socks: What Podiatrists Look For
Diabetic Socks: What Podiatrists Look For
A sock is the layer sitting directly against the skin for the whole day.
For people with diabetes or reduced sensation, small details such as seams, tight bands and moisture management matter.

Reduce rubbing and pressure
Look for smooth construction with minimal internal seams. The sock should fit without wrinkles that can create concentrated pressure inside footwear.
The cuff should stay up without leaving a deep constriction mark around the lower leg.
Manage moisture and hygiene
Breathable fibres help move moisture away from the skin. Silver-containing yarns may also help manage odour-causing bacteria within the fabric.
Change damp socks promptly and let footwear dry fully between uses.

Use socks as part of daily foot checks
Inspect the feet when socks come off and check the inside of the sock for moisture, blood or discharge that may signal an unnoticed skin problem.
New redness, blisters, cuts or swelling should be reviewed promptly by the person's treating clinician.
