Most of the features that determine work boot comfort are hidden once the boot is assembled.

Cutting a boot open makes it easier to see how the orthotic, midsole and stability layers work together.

The orthotic is the first support layer

A shaped insole follows the arch and cups the heel. Targeted cushioning under the heel and forefoot helps spread pressure where the foot repeatedly contacts the boot.

A removable flat liner may add softness, but it does not provide the same structure.

Midsole, shank and stiff board

The cushioned midsole separates the foot from the hard wearing outsole. Through the middle, a shank and stiff board resist excessive bending and twisting.

That stability encourages the boot to flex at the toes while resting the arch between the heel and forefoot.
