Why Your Heels Hurt in the Morning

Heel pain that is worst during the first steps out of bed is a common plantar fasciitis pattern.

The discomfort can ease as the tissue warms, then return after prolonged standing or another period of rest.

What the plantar fascia does

The plantar fascia is a strong band running from the heel toward the toes. It helps support the arch and manages load as the foot moves.

Repeated strain can irritate its attachment near the inner underside of the heel.

Why the first steps can hurt

During rest, the foot relaxes and the irritated tissue is unloaded. The first standing steps suddenly tension it again, creating a sharp or pulling sensation.

Tight calf muscles and a foot that rolls excessively can add to that load.

Reduce strain through the day

Supportive footwear, an appropriate orthotic, gradual calf stretching and sensible activity modification are common starting points.

Seek assessment if pain is severe, follows an injury, includes numbness or swelling, or does not improve.
