Do you wonder why your feet hurt at work? If your feet are aching by smoko… or you’re limping around
Do you wonder why your feet hurt at work? If your feet are aching by smoko… or you’re limping around by the end of the day… there’s a good chance your work boots aren’t supporting you enough. This is something I see every single week in the podiatry clinic. A lot of tradies think sore feet are just “part of the job.” They assume if you’re on concrete, ladders, scaffolding, warehouse floors, roofs, or uneven ground all day, pain is just something you have to put up with. But that’s not actually true. In many cases, the problem isn’t you. It’s your boots. Here’s what often happens. Every day, your feet absorb enormous loads. Most people will take somewhere between 8,000 and 15,000 steps in a workday. For tradies, warehouse workers, mechanics, sparkies, chippies, and factory workers, that number can be even higher. Now think about what happens with every step. Your foot hits the ground. Your arch flattens slightly to absorb force. Your muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints all work together to control that movement. That’s normal. But if your work boots are too soft… too flat… or simply don’t support your foot properly, your arch can collapse too much. That means your feet roll in excessively — what we call overpronation. And when that happens over and over again, those tissues in the foot start working harder than they’re designed to. Eventually, you cross a line. Your tissues are being overloaded faster than your body can repair them. That’s when problems start. You begin to get things like: * Heel pain * Heel spurs * Plantar Fasciitis * Arch pain * Tight calves * Shin splints * Aching ankles * Burning forefoot pain * General tired, sore, fatigued feet and legs This is what we call an overuse injury. It usually doesn’t happen overnight. It builds gradually. At first, you might just notice your feet feel tired at the end of the day. Then you start waking up with soreness. Then one morning you get that classic stabbing pain in your heel when you take your first few steps out of bed. That’s often when people finally decide to do something about it. So what do we try first in the podiatry clinic? We support the feet. Because when your feet are properly supported, they don’t have to work as hard. And that’s a really important distinction. Supporting your feet does not weaken them. People sometimes worry that arch support will make their feet “lazy.” That’s not what happens. Your feet still move. Your muscles still work. You still build strength from walking and working all day. What proper support does is help reduce the excessive strain. It helps keep the foot moving in a more efficient, stable path. Think of it like wheel alignment on a car. If the wheels are out of alignment, the tyres wear unevenly and everything works harder. Your feet are the same. If they’re rolling too far inward all day, your tissues fatigue faster. Good support helps keep everything tracking straighter. That means: Less strain on the plantar fascia. Less stress on the heel. Less overload through the arches. Less fatigue in the calves and legs. That’s exactly what we aim for in our work boots. At ERGONX, our boots are designed by podiatrists with one goal: Help facilitate more natural walking while reducing overload on the feet. We do that with three major things: 1. Arch Support Our orthotic-style arch support helps keep the foot aligned and limits excessive pronation. 2. Cushioning We cushion the feet to help reduce shock travelling through the heels, knees, and legs. 3. Mechanical Support Features like the shank, stiff board, heel counter, and structured sole help reduce excessive twisting and collapse. The result? Your feet work more efficiently. And when your feet work more efficiently, they fatigue less. That means more comfort across the workday. Less pain. Less soreness. Less of that “my boots feel dead by end of day
