Flexible, Semi-Rigid and Rigid Orthotics Compared

Orthotics vary in length and stiffness, so the amount of cushioning and control changes from one design to another. Three examples illustrate the progression from a soft full-length insole to firmer three-quarter-length supports.

Soft Full-Length Support

The flexible full-length orthotic bends easily and provides cushioning along the whole foot. Its arch shape offers a gentler level of support than the firmer examples.

Semi-Rigid Three-Quarter Support

The semi-rigid orthotic finishes before the toes and holds its shape more firmly. It provides a stronger arch contour and more control than the soft full-length option while retaining some flexibility.

Rigid Three-Quarter Support

The rigid orthotic also uses a three-quarter-length shape but resists bending much more strongly. It is presented as the highest-control option for feet that require firmer support.
