When body weight moves onto the foot, the arch naturally lowers to help absorb load. Overpronation describes this inward rolling and lowering movement when it becomes more pronounced.

As the arch drops, the foot also becomes longer. These are two parts of the same movement rather than separate changes.

The arch lowers under load

The arch is not a rigid structure. As weight transfers onto the foot, it lowers and the foot rolls inward. With overpronation, that inward movement is greater and the arch moves closer to the ground.

Overpronation = a greater inward roll of the foot, accompanied by a drop in arch height.

Why the foot becomes longer

The arch forms a curve between the heel and the front of the foot. When that curve lowers, the distance along the ground increases. In simple terms, flattening the arch makes the foot longer.

This lengthening happens while the foot is bearing weight. The unloaded foot may therefore appear shorter and more arched than the same foot during standing or walking.

One movement, two visible changes

The drop in arch height and the increase in foot length occur together. They are the visible result of the foot moving and changing shape under load during overpronation.
